The Third Tomato Had A Little, Green Worm
Cooking is a great pleasure in life. And eating. Something happened tonight that probably marked me for life.
Mental movies sometimes take me by surprise. I do adore tomatoes. My family always grew a big, organic, vegetable garden. Lots of tomatoes of all kinds contributed to our larder over the winter in the form of homemade pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce and canned tomatoes .
My three brothers and I were given the job of hunting for tomato worms, those monstrous fat things eating away at leaves. They looked just like the tomato stems and were very hard to see especially for nearsighted me. THEY earned a nickel each. I NEVER got a single one. I’m probably marked for life.
In all of my born days, I’ve never cut up a tomato and had a worm poke up its head or tail or middle. It happened! An organic, hothouse tomato, the last of three on the stem. I picked it up and felt a kind of bump. When I sliced it off, that THING poked up and out.
Disgusted, I tossed it in the garbage.
THEN I got to thinking. What about the ones I ate? Did they have those THINGS inside and I just didn’t notice? If not, where did those THINGS come from? I have other foods close by. Did it come from the cantaloupe or butternut squash? Surely not the onion! Oh dear, maybe all my food is contaminated. Did those tomatoes touch my turnip or kale in the refrigerator.
What have I EATEN?
I’m probably marked for life
